He might have been with 900 prostitutes

COLUMBUS, Ohio —
A man suspected in what authorities called a "monumental" string of sex-related crimes
faced a Franklin County judge Saturday morning,
two days after he was involved in an early morning chase.

Edwin "Gene" Zimmerman is accused of raping a Columbus woman
and abducting another woman.

According to prosecutors,
Zimmerman, 46, said he had sex with 800-900 prostitutes
in the last seven years.

"He said he could not recall the names or faces and could not estimate how many
were forced to have sex with him," according to court records.

Investigators with both Columbus and London police departments said
that they have no idea how many women Zimmerman victimized over the years
but said that they have little doubt that there are many more victims out there.

On Friday, officers searched Zimmerman's London apartment in hopes of finding
evidence linking him to additional crimes.

Zimmerman's ex-wife said that he served time for raping and beating a woman
at the Foster Chapel Cemetery in the 1980s, the same cemetery where a 15-year-old girl
was raped and killed in 1991.
According to the Madison County Sheriff's Office, investigators questioned Zimmerman
about Jessica Keen's slaying and tested his DNA for a possible match.
There was no match and earlier this year, investigators charged another man
with Keen's slaying.

Zimmerman's ex-wife told 10TV News that she endured years of physical abuse
at his hands and said she was not surprised by the allegations against him.
She said Zimmerman was "capable of anything."
